Last Week Learning:

* Pen-Pal in Shanghai: Xu Laoshi and I are working on arranging pen pals for the second graders in China. We will need permission for sending your child’s letter to China pen pal. We will send another email with a request for your consent for this.

* Chinese Dictation Test on 4/3 Wednesday: please help your child review the words on the reviewing list they have got.

* Math Cumulative Test on 4/5 Friday: will include all the topics we have learned.

* Buddy Reading with Dragon class (kindergarten) next week: In order to improve the students’ reading fluency and to promote read-a -thon, the horse class will go to Dragon class to do buddy reading! Excited!

* Read-a-thon: starts on Monday. You will get a sheet everyday from Monday to Friday on which I records how much time  your child spends on reading in class. It will be attached on their homework logs.

*Pajama Day: Friday, April 5 !  To celebrate our read-a-thon, all students are invited to come to school on Friday next week in their pajamas! 🙂

* Whole class project(a play): The kids have worked hard and enjoy it so much! They completed the first scene and will work on the second scene from next week. I have noticed that the students have applied their communication and cooperation skills which we talked about before in doing this big project. This activity also let me see my kids’ strong  problem solving abilities! It is a good time for me to arrange the instruction of  problem solving strategies for them!

  • Mandarin Reading: 1) whole class: completed Better Chinese Lesson 21  2) guided reading in centers:  他跑得快!(he runs quickly) from Chinese Reader series.
  • Writing:  1) whole class: narrative writing practice (a story about following rules) 2)in centers: work with the students individually to edit the letter they have written for the pen-pal in Shanghai.
  • Math: Unit 10 Fraction  Next week: continue Fraction
  • English:

Last Week Learning:

  • Mandarin Reading: 1) whole class: have started Better Chinese Lesson 21 (please reminder your child complete reading assignment)   2) guided reading in centers:  去超市買東西(go to supermarket) from Chinese Reader series. 3) content based(social studies) guided reading in centers: My First Mini Encyclopedia of Nation: America
  • Writing: have started Narrative Instruction in Mandarin. Students are expected to write a story associated social studies topic in Mandarin next week.
  • Math: complete Unit 9 Money   Next week: Fraction
  • From last week, I have taken some time to talk about discussion skills and to do  some group discussion activities.  Group projects which we have done two weeks ago let me realize that supporting my students discussion skills development will definitely help their cooperation. To provide more cooperation opportunities , we are doing a whole class project. They work together to create a play based on the class favorite story 把家弄丟了(I can not find my house!).

Last Week Learning:

  • Characters: 很冷  很熱   天氣  怎麼樣  晴天
  • Mandarin Reading: 1) have completed Lesson 20 of Better Chinese. please reminder your child recite the passages on pink paper. 2)  guided reading in whole class:  Lesson 2-Lesson 4 Living Mandarin
  • Mandarin Writing: 1)editing instruction this week 2)will start narrative writing instruction  from next week
  • Math: chapter 1 of Unit 9 addition of Money. Next Week: chapter 2 of Unit 9 subtraction  of  Money
  • Presentation in Dragon Class (Kindergarten): the groups were asked to present their posters they made last week  for kindergartners. They had to cooperate to design the performance , to explain their posters and to answer the kindergartners’  questions of their posters. The Horse kids class did a wonderful job! Last Week Learning:

Next Tuesday – Friday:  Parents Teacher Conference. I am looking forward to meeting you!

  • Characters: 日本, 餓, 橡皮, 大家, 渴
  • Mandarin Reading: 1) have started Lesson 20 of Better Chinese. Please reminder your child complete the reading assignment and help them record the time (pink paper). 2) guided reading in centers:  “我的數學課” (My Math Lessons) from Chinese Reader series. 3)  guided reading in whole class:  Lesson 1 Living Mandarin
  • Mandarin Writing: Writing Tests last week: My New classroom & A letter to my new friend. ( will help the students edit their writing individually in next week center activities.
  • Math: Completed Unit 8.  Next Week: Unit 9 Money
  • Students watched video of a Chinese class discussing rules and did a comparing and contrasting graph. They were also asked to think about questions to interview Ma Laoshi about the class rules, then make a poster to demonstrate the answers of the question they have asked. This activity is a good opportunity for my students to learn how to work with others as a group. It also provided me an opportunity  for me to observe  my students’ cooperation skills and to plan instructions to develop these skills.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation for the parents. Thank you so much for helping us to set up such a lovely school. The children love the classrooms, basketball court, cafeteria and even the office! We enjoyed our fist week very much! Thank you!

* Chinese Dictation Test on 3/6 Wednesday. Please help your child review the characters on the review list they have got.

* Math Unit1-Unit 8 Test on 3/8 Friday: the test includes all the topic we have learned; Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Measure( length & Weigh). Please help your child review.

*Thank you Lia Barrow (Elijah’s Mom) to organize such a wonderful performance for our black history month. The kids enjoyed it very much!

Last Week Learning:

  • Characters:   法國, 寫字, 西班牙, 說華語,讀課文
  • Mandarin Reading: complete lesson 19  “Direction” of Better Chinese.  The students are asked to recite the passages from the chapter on pink paper. This practice help improve students’ fluency in Chinese. Please reminder your child complete the assignment.
  • Mandarin Writing: 1 Center Activity: guided reading a new book “我的數學課” (My Math Lessons) from Chinese Reader series.  The groups are asked to use the sentence structures from the book to write their own paragraph. 2 Class: Writing Test. Descriptive writing on the topic ” My New Classroom”
  • Math: Completed Chapter 3 of Unit 8 Multiplication &Division of 10. Next week: Division with Reminder.
